- The football mascot designer
who created Coventry City's Sky Blue Sam has made a new character
for FA Cup heroes Burton Albion FC.

- Angela Hallam of Clara Street,
Stoke, Coventry, worked round-the-clock to bring her new creation
to life before the club's televised FA Cup clash with Manchester
United last weekend.

- The 50-year-old designed and
made Betty Brewer, a girlfriend for the Burton's current mascot
Billy Brewer.
- But the mum-of-two faced a frantic
race against the clock to get her latest design made before the
non-league club's biggest game in their history.

- She said: "I went to bed
at half past three and finished it Sunday morning. I was still
finishing the sock when it was collected at 11am.

- "It was still warm from
my hands when he was wearing it for the game."

- Club officials had originally
rejected plans to have a second mascot - but changed their minds
when the money-spinning FA Cup draw was made.

- Betty Brewer will travel up
to Old Trafford nest week for the replay after the club's heroic
performance against the Red Devils on Sunday morning.

- Angela became a pioneer in making
team mascots - a trend which began in America - when she made
Wolfie for Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1984.

- Since then, she has made costumes
for Birmingham City, Leyton, Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion,
Walsall as well as Coventry City.

- Angela, who has lived in Coventry
all her life, said: "What I love about it is the whole crazy
world of mascots themselves.

- "I'm the only manufacturer
who gets involved with mascots themselves.

- "There's a whole subculture,
you could almost make a soap opera out of it.

- "They are even forming
a union."

- In 2004 she appeared in a book
called Mascots: Football's Furry Friends by Rock Minter, a history
of the mascot phenomenon and people who make them.
